VISION CORRECTION PROCEDURES

Laser eye surgery to correct shortsight, farsight and astigmatism first commenced with Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) in 1987.  The technology behind laser eye surgery has changed dramatically in the last two decades, with lasers becoming much more sophisticated with expert systems and clever mechanisms to ensure safety.  Although technology has advance considerably, this is only as good as the providing surgeon and clinic -  with the right care and expertise, amazing results and complete visual freedome can be achieved.

What Is Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery is used to correct refractive error (shortsight, farsight and astigmatism).  Several types of laser eye surgery procedures exist, IntraLASIK, LASIK, LASEK, PRK, Epi-Lasik, PresbyLasik etc.  Lasers are now also used to perform Refractive Lens Exchange.  This has generated a new language of terminology including: Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery, Femtophacoemulsification and Victus Laser Lens Exchange.

 

There are several broad categories of Vision Correction Surgery and these are outlined below.  The choice of which is best for you, is based on a variety of factors, including your visual needs,age, optical correction and your eye health.  Your surgeon should after a thorough consultation be able to advise you of what alternatives are available and guide you in making the best choice

Alteration of corneal shape
A laser is used to alter the shape and power of the cornea. This can be under a thin corneal flap (LASIK or IntraLASIK) or on the surface of the cornea (PRK or LASEK). The procedure can be used to correct shortsight, farsight, astigmatism and now eliminate reading glasses (presbyopia).

Refractive Lens Exchange
The lens within the eye is removed and replaced with a sophisticated lens implant that is multifocal and provide correction of vision at all distances or accommodate and improve depth of focus by moving inside the eye.  The procedure is essentially the same as a cataract operation.  Lasers have now been introduced which provide an unprecedented level of safety and precision. 

Lens Implants
This procedure involves the implantation of lenses inside the eye to correct refractive error.  There are different lenses available commercially and each has its advantages and disadvantages. Common to all, is the ability to treat very high prescriptions and reversibility.  This option is an excellent alternative to laser eye surgery involving. Completely reversible and used for very high levels of correction and as an alternative to laser eye surgery
